THE DIRECT ANSWER
What the university requires before your defence.
At least 14 weeks before the defence, the supervisor submits the approved manuscript and digital version. The doctoral committee’s judgement is due by eight weeks, and three printed copies must reach the Beadle’s Office by four weeks.

Do not print before the UvA approval step is complete.
UvA says you may print or copy the thesis only after the manuscript has been approved and passed the plagiarism check. The official UvA title page must be included in the printed thesis without modification.
Use the printed-copy deadline as the deadline for delivery—not as the date to send an unapproved PDF to a printer. Leave time for a proof, corrections and delivery.

Make sure the supervisor-approved manuscript is the version submitted for assessment and plagiarism checking.
Print and digital versions
Plan the final print copy and the identical digital version for online publication as one production task.
Licence agreement
Complete the agreement required for publication through UvA-DARE and flag any copyright or embargo issue early.

COMMON QUESTIONS
Answers from the published process.
How many copies go to the Beadle’s Office?
UvA’s central completion page says three printed copies must arrive no later than four weeks before the defence. Faculty recipients can be additional.
When should the committee process start?
UvA describes the committee proposal as a step around six months before the intended defence date.
What happens to the digital thesis?
The dean submits the digital version to the University Library, and the thesis is published through UvA-DARE after the licence agreement is signed.
Can I make changes after the manuscript is submitted?
UvA says no changes are allowed once the supervisor-approved final manuscript is submitted. The committee stage is not a new editing round; plan any non-substantive final production work only within the university’s allowed process.
Do I need to use the UvA title page?
Yes. After reserving the date and submitting the thesis title, you receive the official title page. UvA says it must be included in the printed thesis without modification.
Who owns the thesis copyright?
UvA’s copyright guidance says the doctoral researcher holds copyright in the doctoral thesis unless copyright in previously published sections was transferred to a publisher. Ask early if an embargo may be needed.
